Integrity assessment methods: questions for research.

Matthew Brown, PE·1 min read·Article edited: 2026-09-12

Editorial research guide. An edit date is not a legal-currentness check.

A guide to organizing research about in-line inspection, pressure testing and direct assessment without treating a summary as a method-selection decision.

Define the research question.

Record the threat, pipeline context and intended use of the assessment information.

Examine method limits.

Consult the relevant regulatory and technical sources for what a method addresses and what remains uncertain.

Document the decision basis.

Keep source passages, data limitations and reviewer questions with the analysis.

Check the source and date

Use the cited government regulation or case document to establish what it says. Check the relevant date, scope and later amendments before applying it. Related interpretation letters, guidance, summaries and case allegations have different roles; they do not all state a binding requirement.

Continue your research

Record your question, the source passages you reviewed and anything still uncertain. KONDWIT can help organize that research; your team remains responsible for reviewing the conclusion.
